FMHS Outstanding Student Award
The Fort Morgan High School Outstanding Student Award started in the 1970's after an outstanding Lion drowned in a canoeing accident on the South Platte River. The award was named the Ted Kinkel Athletic award for a number of years. This award was for the most deserving athlete in the senior class.
In the late 1980's, since the name Ted Kinkel was unfamiliar to most Lions and citizens in the community, the name was changed to the Outstanding Senior Award. It is given to an outstanding senior—one who has excellent grades, excellent participation in school, community, and church activities. The award is given to a student who doesn't always get the recognition that other members of his class do; but is just as deserving. This is an annual award given at the end of the school year with the help of the school superintendent, school principal, and counselors. An award is presented to the senior for his outstanding school participation.
Student of the Month/Student Recognition
The Student of the Month program is a recognition of Senior students from Fort Morgan High School who have excelled in a variety of ways. They are selected by High School personnel on a monthly basis. Each student is honored at a regular Lions meeting and awarded a recognition plaque as well as public awareness in the local newspaper. Since its inception in l953 approximately 555 students have been honored by the Fort Morgan Lions Club.
Each year, the Fort Morgan Lions Club recognizes 16 Fort Morgan Middle School students. The Good Solid Citizens award is given to the students who are reliable, cooperative, and get along well with others in the school. Chosen by the teachers, these are students who take their responsibilities as citizens very seriously. They would give a shirt off their backs to help others. They are always thinking of others first. The Lions Club invites them to lunch and, with the assistance of their principal, awards them with a certificate of recognition.
Every Friday during weekly meetings Lions is visited by a representative or representatives from a local initiative. Lions members enjoy staying informed on local efforts and activities and lions members also enjoy meeting the many faces that make up the community.
